Chapter 2 - Logging On to VINES File Volumes
Logging on to a heterogeneous network is the process of identifying yourself to the network and selecting the zone and file volumes where you want to work. This chapter describes how to
Identify yourself to VINES Use the Banyan Network Login Screen Log into the network Change your password Set login options Solve common login problems Log off the network
The first step in logging on to VINES servers is to identify yourself to the network. To do this, you need two items:
Your user name Your password
If you know these two items, continue reading. If not, see your system administrator before proceeding.
Your system administrator provides you with a user name that identifies you whenever you access the network and log on to a server. This user name is created in StreetTalk. StreetTalk is the VINES naming system that identifies every user and resource (such as printers, file volumes, and other network services) to the network.
Your StreetTalk user name consists of three parts, each separated by an at-sign (@). The three parts are:
Item Name - The most specific part of the name, such as your full name Group Name - The name of the group to which you belong, such as a department Organization Name - The name of the organization to which the group belongs, such as a company division, or company name
For a Macintosh user, your StreetTalk name can be a maximum of 31 characters long, including the at-sign separators.
Example StreetTalk Name
Duncan Fraser, a salesperson at the Chicago headquarters of World Commodity Trading, has this StreetTalk name:
Duncan Fraser@Sal@WCTUS
For a DOS or OS/2 workstation user, a StreetTalk name can be a maximum of 64 characters, including the at-sign separators. If your StreetTalk name is greater than 31 characters, and you are using a Macintosh, have your system administrator give you a StreetTalk nickname. You can use this nickname to log on to the network.
Example StreetTalk Nickname
Duncan Fraser might have the following nickname:
Duncanf@Sal@WCTUS
Note that you must include your group and organization names with your nickname, as shown in the above example. The total of all the characters in your nickname, group and organization names, and the at-signs, cannot exceed 31 characters.
Your password protects your user name so that only you can access the information and resources assigned specifically to you.
Passwords are created by your system administrator. Depending on the security features of your network, you may or may not be able to set and change your password. Make sure you understand and follow the correct password procedures at your site.
Passwords are up to 8 characters long and are case-sensitive - you must type them exactly as defined. For example, if Duncan Fraser' s password is "Tball," he must type Tball. The network will not accept entries such as tball or TBALL.
After you log on to a server for the first time, you may be authorized to change your own password. Instructions to do so are included later in this chapter.
The next section describes the Banyan Login Screen, and telly you how to log on to servers and access VINES file volumes. This is the AppleShare-compatible method of accessing network file volumes.
The Banyan Network Login Screen
The Banyan Login Screen allows you to enter your username and password, and login to the VINES network. You can also set your password and change your login options.
You can use one of three methods to access the Banyan Login Network Screen and log in to your network:

If You Have Problems Logging In
If you cannot log on successfully to a VINES server, the Chooser displays a short explanatory message. Barring a physical problem with the network, the most common causes are incorrectly entered StreetTalk user names or passwords.
The following error messages that can display during login:
Cannot process your profile because the system software on this Macintosh is too old: Install System 7 on the Macintosh workstation.
Cannot get profile: Banyan error message: Contact your system administrator
Insufficient memory to process your profile: Remove other init programs from your workstation and restart.
Login was not completely successful...logging you out: Log in again. The user profile contains a LOGIN ABORT statement that automatically logs the user out when an error is encountered in a SETDRIVE or SETPRINT command.
"USE" statements nested too deep: Change the USE statement in the user profile so that there are only three levels of USE statements.
Warning:/Root ignored, service-name: Add SETDRIVE without the root switch in the "IF WORKSTATION=MAC" statement.
Cannot get AppleTalk zone information in service-name: Install AppleTalk. Install the site patch for VINES 5.5 on the service 5.52(5)-VNS-Ef-1 or any later versions.
service-name is not available: Wait until the file volume or printer becomes available.
service-name is already mounted: Continue with the desired application.
Cannot choose service-name because the current printer type is not LaserWriter: Choose LaserWriter as the Macintosh printer type.
Error accessing printer resources: Re-install the printer device.
Error choosing the printer: Re-install the printer device.
Cannot change your password: Banyan error message Try changing the password again. If this fails, see your system administrator.
Follow these steps to log out of the network:
1. Double-click the Banyan Logout icon on your local drive. If you placed an alias of the Banyan Logout in your Apple menu, click the Banyan Logout file in the Apple menu.
You are now logged out. The network closes any open network applications or files.
Situations sometimes occur when the server you are logged onto shuts down. There are two ways for this to occur:
The system administrator shuts down the server The server shuts down unexpectedly due to unforeseen hardware or software problems
Thus, one of two types of server shutdown messages appear on your screen when this happens. The first type is a "controlled" shutdown performed by the system administrator. A controlled shutdown displays two messages. The first message warns that the server will shut down in one minute:
Should this message appear, you have one minute to save your file(s) and close any open applications. The second message appears one minute later:
The second type of shutdown messages occurs when the server shuts down unexpectedly, due to a hardware or software problem. One of two messages appear:
Should either of these "unexpected shutdown" messages appear, see your system administrator.
