Appendix C - Interpreting AFP Log Messages
Introduction to Interpreting AFP Log Messages
This appendix contains explanations of the log messages that you see in the log for the AFP service. The first four sections are organized by the log level. The fifth section documents fatal logging conditions that may occur under any log level.
In all sections:
AFP refers to the VINES AFP (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) service. <Sess: %d> refers to the session ID number.
<Sess: %d>; VINES AppleTalk Filing Protocol Service Revision %s - General welcome issued at startup time, this message is useful in locating the last time AFP was started.
<Sess: %d>; AppleTalk is not ready. Waiting 5 minutes before retry - AFP attempted to register its name on the AppleTalk network, but the AppleTalk software on the server is not currently running or is having problems starting up.
<Sess: %d>; Registering Service: %s - AFP successfully registered the specified name on the AppleTalk network.
<Sess: %d>; All zones not available. Register on all available zones - While attempting to register the appropriate names on the AppleTalk network, AFP received an error from AppleTalk that indicated that all zones connected to this server have not completed initialization. After receiving the error on two successive calls, AFP will force the name registration in all zones currently available.
<Sess: %d>; FATAL: No AppleTalk Zones initialized after extended delay - This message appears after 90 minutes if AppleTalk has not been started or has been started but no AppleTalk zones have successfully initialized.
<Sess: %d>; Starting RPC Tasking daemon for socket %d - Reports the VINES socket that the NetRPC daemon is running on; it also indicates that the daemon task was successfully started.
<Sess: %d>; Disconnecting Session Reference: %d; Session Data Block Address:%lx - Specified session was disconnected by AFP. The user did not issue the AFP Logout command. VINES Security Service initiates this logout due to a security violation.
<Sess: %d>; Mounting Volume: %s; VolId: 0x%x - Lists the volumes available under AFP and specifies the Volume Identifier for the volume.
<Sess: %d>; Unmounting Volume: %s; VolId: 0x%x - Identifies a volume that is no longer available under AFP. This message indicates that the AppleTalk stack is down or that AFP has shut down.
<Sess: %d>; AFP Configuration allows Guest Login - AFP has been configured to allow Guest Login from Macintosh workstations.
<Sess: %d>; AFP Configuration does not allow Guest Login - AFP has been configured not to allow Guest Login from Macintosh workstations.
<Sess: %d>; AFP Configuration File mapping level set to %d - Specifies the current level of mapping between DOS and Macintosh files.
<Sess: %d>; %s: Login user: %s; Session id: %d - Identifies which users have logged in, what their Session ID is, and what type of login they have performed (AFP or VINES). Since the Session ID is supplied on every Log Statement, you can connect each log statement to the appropriate user.
<Sess: %d>; Logging Out User: %s; Session id: %d - Specifies which user has logged out and what Session ID the user was assigned.
<Sess: %d>; WARNING....Desktop Database has been corrupted. Recommend running vfsck - Indicates one of the desktop database files contains invalid information, and recommends running the vfsck utility to rebuild the desktop databases. This message is only a warning. References to the desktop database file should continue to work, but Banyan cannot guarantee that the information will be maintained correctly if the file service is stopped and started. Running the vfsck utility should correct the desktop database problem. Contact your Banyan support representative.
<Sess: %d>; AFP: Guest User has Logged in; Session id: %d - Indicates a user has logged in as guest and supplies the Session ID.
<Sess: %d>; WARNING: Attempt to release a zero file handle - AFP attempted to return a zero file handle to VFS. VFS does not have a file handle of zero.
