Appendix C - Keyboard Conventions
This appendix describes keyboard conventions that apply to the AppleTalk menus and screens. (Menus enable you to pick a function, and perform that function on an item you select from a list. Screens enable you to type in information that needs to be entered, or reply to a prompt.)
Some key functions differ between IBM-compatible workstation keyboards and keyboards used with ASCII terminals (also called "dumb terminals"). These differences depend on whether you are making selections at a menu or entering data. This appendix describes the key functions for both situations.
Table C-1 describes the use of IBM-compatible workstation keys while you are making a menu selection.
Key | Function |
DOWN ARROW | Moves the cursor down to the next function or item. If you' re at the last function or item, the cursor moves to the first function or item. |
UP ARROW | Moves the cursor up to the previous function or item. If you're at the first function or item, the cursor moves to the last function or item. |
LEFT ARROW | Moves the cursor to the function on the left or up to the previous item. |
RIGHT ARROW | Moves the cursor to the function on the right or down to the next item. |
ENTER, or RETURN | Tells the system you want to choose the highlighted menu selection. |
HOME | Moves the cursor to the upper portion of the menu, where you can choose a function. |
ESC | Exits from the menu and returns to a previous point. |
CTRL-D | Scrolls the screen down so you see more text. |
CTRL-U | Scrolls the screen up so you see more text. |
F1 | Displays a help message. |
F10 | Exits from the menu and returns to a previous point. |
CTRL-X | Moves the cursor from the bottom portion of a menu to the top portion (like HOME). |
Table C-2 describes the use of the keys while you are making a menu selection, as applies to ASCII terminals.
Key | Function |
DOWN ARROW | Moves the cursor down to the next function or item. If you' re at the last function or item, the cursor move to the first function or item. |
UP ARROW | Moves the cursor up to the previous function or item. If you're at the first function or item, the cursor move to the last function or item. |
LEFT ARROW | Moves the cursor to the function on the left or up to the previous item. |
RIGHT ARROW | Moves the cursor to the function on the right or down to the next item. |
ENTER, or RETURN | Tells the system you want to choose the highlighted menu selection. |
CTRL-Z | Moves the cursor to the upper portion of the menu, where you can choose a function. If you are at the upper portion of a menu, CTRL-Z returns you to the previous menu. |
ESC | Exits from the menu and returns to a previous point. |
CTRL-F-1 | Displays help. |
CTRL-D | Scrolls the screen down so you see more text. |
CTRL-U | Scrolls the screen up so you see more text. |
Some functions require you to supply information. For example, when you add an AppleTalk port, you must use a screen if you want to type in a description of the port.
All data entry on a screen normally occurs in overstrike mode - any characters you type replace any existing characters in those positions. If unwanted characters remain in a field, space over or delete them.
Table C-3 describes the IBM-compatible workstation key functions during data entry.
Key | Function |
DOWN ARROW | Moves the cursor to the next line. If the cursor is at the last line, the workstation beeps. |
UP ARROW | Moves the cursor to the previous line. If the cursor is at the first line, the workstation beeps. |
LEFT ARROW | Moves the cursor one character position to the left. If the cursor is at the first character on a line, it moves to the last character on the previous line. If there is no previous line, the workstation beeps. |
RIGHT ARROW | Moves the cursor one character position to the right. If the cursor is at the last character on a line, it moves to the first character on the next line. If there is no next line, the workstation beeps. |
ENTER, or RETURN | Tells the system you have finished making a response, that you accept the current value, or that you want to insert a carriage return in text. Moves the cursor to the beginning of the next line. |
BACKSPACE | Moves the cursor one character position to the left, erasing the character currently in that position. If the cursor is at the first character on a line, it moves to the last character on the previous line. If there is no previous line, the workstation beeps. |
DEL | Deletes the character under the cursor and closes up the blank space. |
ESC | Exits from a screen canceling any changes you have entered. The system retains the previous values and returns to a previous point. |
HOME | Moves the cursor to the first characterof the first line on the screen. |
CTRL-D | Scrolls the screen down so you can see more text. |
CTRL-U | Scrolls the screen up so you can see more text. |
F1 | Displays a help message. |
F10 | Exits from a screen after processing the information you have entered. |
CTRL-X | Erases all characters from the cursor position to the end of the line. |
DOWN ARROW | Moves the cursor to the next line. If the cursor is at the last line, the workstation beeps. |
UP ARROW | Moves the cursor to the previous line. If the cursor is at the first line, the workstation beeps. |
Table C-4 describes the ASCII terminal functions during data entry.
Key | Function |
LEFT ARROW | Moves the cursor one character position to the left. If the cursor is at the first character on a line, it moves to the last character on the previous line. If there is no previous line, the workstation beeps. |
RIGHT ARROW | Moves the cursor one character position to the right. If the cursor is at the last character of a line, it moves to the first character on the next line. If there is no next line, the workstation beeps. |
ENTER, or RETURN | Tells the system you have finished making a response, that you accept the current value, or that you want to insert a carriage return in text. Moves the cursor to the beginning of the next line. |
BACKSPACE | Moves the cursor one space to the left, erasing the character currently in that position. If the cursor is at the first character on a line, it moves to the last character on the previous line. If there is no previous line, the workstation beeps. |
SPACE BAR | Deletes the character under the cursor and closes up the blank space. |
ESC | Exits from a screen canceling any changes you have entered. The system retains the previous values and returns to a previous point. |
CTRL-F-1 | Displays a help message. |
CTRL-F-0 | Exits from a screen after processing the information you have entered. |
CTRL-Z | Exits from a screen after processing the information you have entered. |
