Unpacking the ICAmC Card

This guide
One ICAmC card
One six-port ICA cable
One package of 12 standoffs
One diskette, containing DOS diagnostics

Caution: Avoid touching card components. Static electricity can damage circuitry on the ICAmC card. Before removing the card from the antistatic bag, discharge static from your hands by touching an unpainted, grounded metal surface.

The ICAmC card
The ICAmC diskette
A copy of the Reference Diskette shipped with your Micro Channel server

To Prepare the MicroChannel Software

1. Insert the backup copy of the Reference Diskette in drive A and reboot the server.

2. Make sure the diskette is not write protected.

3. From the Main Menu, choose Copy an Option Diskette.

You are prompted to insert the ICAmC diskette.

4. Remove the backup copy of the Reference Diskette and insert the ICAmC diskette that came with the card.

This diskette contains the name, ID, and configuration requirements of the ICAmC card.

5. Remove the ICAmC diskette and insert the Reference Diskette.

The information from the ICAmC diskette is copied to the Reference Diskette.

Installing the ICAmC Card into the Server

Caution: Take precautions against static electricity when handling the card. Use an antistatic strap if you have one. Otherwise, before removing the card from the antistatic packaging, release the static discharge from your hands by touching an unpainted metal surface. Hold the card by the edges to avoid touching its components.

To Install the ICAmC Card into the Server

1. Shut down and power off the server.

2. Open the server, following the procedures that apply to your computer.

3. Install the card in any available slot.

4. Screw the card into place.

5. Close the server.

Configuring the Server

To Configure the MicroChannel Server

1. Power on and boot the server with the Reference Diskette.

During the boot procedure, a 165 error code appears, indicating the system detected an unconfigured card.

2. Ignore this message.

The system displays a prompt asking you if you want to run Automatic Configuration.

3. Enter Y to automatically configure the hardware and press ENTER to reboot.

The Reference Diskette chooses a configuration for the card that does not conflict with configurations of other cards in the system. Values assigned to card resources are based on Reference Diskette information.

After the automatic configuration, the Main Menu appears on the screen.

4. From the Main Menu, choose Set Configuration.

5. Choose View Configuration.

6. Write down the values established by the Reference Diskette for System Slot, I/O Address, Memory Address, and interrupt on the Server Configuration worksheet available in the VINES Server Installation Guide.

7. Remove the Reference Diskette from the diskette drive.

1. Boot from the Reference Diskette.

2. Choose Set Configuration.

3. Choose Change Configuration.

4. Enter the new address.

5. Save your changes and exit.

To Add the ICAmC Card to the Server

1. Reboot the server.

2. From the Operator Menu at the server console, choose option 10, System Maintenance.

The System Maintenance menu appears.

3. Choose option 6, Configure/Diagnose Server.

The VINES Server Configuration menu appears.

4. Choose option 1, Add Cards/Change Card Configuration.

5. Choose Add a Card.

6. Select the appropriate card from the displayed list.

The card with its default settings and slot number is added to the server as either accepted or causing a conflict:

- If the card does not cause conflicts with other cards, add the card using the defaults. Write down the settings in your Server Configuration Worksheet available in the VINES Server Installation Guide; skip to step 8.

- If the card causes a conflict, a plus sign (+) appears next to it and the card with which it conflicts. Choose Change Card Settings and continue with step 7.

7. Change any values that cause conflicts.

A list of host resources and supported settings for each resource is provided later in this section.

8. Choose Display Memory Map to assign I/O and RAM memory addresses.

9. Write down the settings in your Server Configuration Worksheet available in the VINES Server Installation Guide.

10. Choose Save Configuration and Exit.

11. Reboot the system.

1. Boot the system with the Reference Diskette.

2. Choose Set Configuration.

3. Choose Change Configuration.

4. Select new values for cards as instructed on the screen.

5. When you finish, save the configuration.

Connecting Serial Lines to the ICAmC Card

Lines 1 and 2 - Up to 64 Kbps (synchronous).

Lines 3 to 6 - Up to 19.2 Kbps (all protocols).

Note: From the perspective of the server software, each connector at the end of each ICA cable serial line functions as a port.

Caution: Take the usual precautions against static when connecting cables at the server.

To Connect the ICA Cable

1. Power off your server.

2. Attach the 62-pin male serial connector to the 62-pin female serial port on the ICA card connector.

3. Tighten down the connecting screws.

4. Remove the dust covers from the ICA cable ports only as you connect the port.

5. Keep the covers on ports to protect them from dust and static electricity until you are ready to use them.

To Connect an ICA Cable Line to a Port

1. Connect the line directly to the port.

2. Secure all connectors by tightening down the screws.

3. To secure an ICA cable connector to another connector that also has two screws, first install a standoff onto each screw on the ICA cable connector.

Figure 4-1 shows the role of the standoffs in connecting two cables together.

Figure 4-1. Using Standoffs to Connect to an ICA Cable

To Connect an ICA Cable Line to a Modem

1. Connect the ICA cable connector directly to the modem.

2. Connect the modular telephone cable or other line that links the other computer to the modem.

3. Make sure the modem is set up properly and plugged in.

4. Power on the modem.
