Chapter 3 - Installing the ATE Option

Overview

Hardware Installation

1. Determine what serial communications cards and ports the ATE service will use.

2. If necessary, install and configure the cards and the serial ports.

3. Record the numbers associated with those serial ports, because you will need them later.

4. Connect the ports to the serial lines and modems the service will use.

Software Installation

1. At the server console, choose Shut Down Server Software.

2. Select Shut down services and return console to Operator Menu.

3. From the Operator Menu, select System Maintenance.

4. From the System Maintenance menu, select Manage Software Options. The screen lists all options currently installed on the server.

Assigning Communications Lines

Assigning a Direct or Dial-out Line

1. From the Operator Menu at the server console, choose Manage Communications.

2. From the Manage Communications menu, choose Serial Communications.

3. From the Serial Communications menu, choose Manage Serial Lines.

4. From the Manage Serial Lines menu, choose Asynchronous Terminal Emulation.

5. At the Slot Number prompt, enter the number of the slot that the card occupies.

6. At the Line Number prompt, enter the number of the port or line on the serial communications card.

7. At the Line Speed prompt, enter the speed at which your modem operates.

You are asked if the modem supports any other line speeds:

- For direct lines, enter NO because direct lines support only one speed.

- For dial-out lines using autodial modems, you can enter YES to repeat the Line Speed prompt and specify another speed. You can specify a maximum of 5 speeds. (Specifying multiple speeds allows the terminal emulation service to choose the speed it needs.)

8. Answer either YES or NO when asked if the modem connected at this line is an autodial modem.

- If you answer NO, the line is assigned and you return to the Manage Serial Lines menu.

- If you answer YES, you are asked if the modem is a TelebitTM T2500 model.

9. At the prompt asking if the modem is a Telebit modem, answer either YES or NO.

- If you answer NO, the line is assigned and you are returned to the Manage Serial Lines menu.

- If you answer YES, you are asked if you want to change the default V.32 protocol to the Telebit PEP protocol. Use the V.32 protocol only if the other modem is also a T2500; otherwise, use the PEP protocol.

Assigning an X.25 Line

Number of PVCs. Remember that X.29 user sessions do not use PVCs. The PVCs you enter are for server-to-server communications only.

Number of SVCs. If the line uses a PDN, enter the number of switched virtual circuits for which you have contracted. If the line does not use a PDN, enter the number of SVCs that you need for X.29 user sessions with the host.

Adding the Service to the Network

Using StreetTalk Explorer

1. Click the New Service icon.

2. Enter the StreetTalk name of the service and a description of the service and click Next.

3. Select the type of service and click Next.

4. Select the server that will contain the service data and click Next.

5. Select the service type, Banyan Asynchronous Terminal Emulation service, and click Next.

6. Select the Start after creation checkbox and click Next. The service is created and started.

Using MSERVICE

1. Run MSERVICE.

2. At the Manage Services menu, choose ADD a Server-based Service.

3. Enter a StreetTalk name for the new ATE service. The name must be unique and should be easily identifiable. For example, you could use a name like ASYNCH@MKTG@WCTUS.

If possible, add the service to a group maintained on the server that provides the serial communications lines for the service. You must be an administrator of the group to do this.

4. Enter a meaningful description of the service.

5. If the network includes more than one server, the Select a Server menu appears. Select the name of the server that contains the serial communications cards and lines that the service will use. You must be an administrator of the server to do this.

6. At the Select Type of Service menu, choose Banyan Asynchronous Terminal Emulation Service as the service type.

7. The service is now added to the network. A prompt appears asking if you want to start the service immediately.

8. To start the service immediately, choose YES.

To control user access or add connections, choose NO.

If you choose YES, the service is started immediately, without any ARL, making it available to all users. It is created without any connections, which means that you can use this service for dial-out only, by using the HOSTS command.

9. When the service has been added, the message *** SERVICE ADDED *** appears on the screen. Press ESC. The system displays the Manage a Service menu.
